CalCASA Legislative Partners Help Children Who Have Been Abused or Neglected

Who Can Become a Legislative Partner?

Anyone who is:

·         Affiliated with a CASA Program (volunteer, board member, staff, or a designated friend of children who have been abused or neglected and are in foster care);

·         Passionate about helping these vulnerable children; and

·         Willing to share their knowledge with state legislators from their district via email, phone calls, and sometimes, in-person visits.

Why Become a Legislative Partner
?

Legislators value the voices of their constituents, volunteers without conflicting interests, and community members who understand the needs of the children. The most powerful message in support of children who have been abused or neglected comes straight from you. CalCASA will help you translate your experiences into letters, phone calls or maybe even in-person contacts with these decision makers.

What Can You Expect To Do As a Legislative Partner?

Your role as a Legislative Partner can include several activities that will help abused and neglected children in California:

·         Receive emails from CalCASA to stay informed about legislative activities.

·         Lend your voice in support of pending legislation and policies.

·         Write or call your legislators, policy-makers and others with influence.

CalCASA will keep you informed about these options for helping.

What Can We Expect in the 2007-08 Legislative Session?

This year’s legislative session will be the most critical yet for the CASA movement in California. Together with local CASA programs, CalCASA will lead Keeping Our Promise – a campaign to make sure that more children and youth in foster care can have a CASA volunteer. Studies show that having a CASA volunteer makes a positive difference in the lives of these children and their families. Yet less than 10% of children and youth in foster care in California currently have a CASA volunteer.

Simply download and complete this Sign-up sheet and we’ll make sure you get the information you need to help us ensure that more children have the benefits of a CASA volunteer in their lives.
